GYROKINESIS®: the What and the Why

What? Maybe you’ve seen GYROKINESIS® on Flow Yoga’s schedule but have been intimidated by the hard-to-pronounce name. Maybe you’ve thought, “What could that be, and is it for me?”

Let’s start with the basics. GYROKINESIS® is pronounced: jahy-roh-ki-nee-sis. Originally called “yoga for dancers,” it is a close cousin of the various yoga styles offered at Flow and is appropriate for a full range of abilities. Like yoga asana, it is a whole-body system that utilizes movement and breath to simultaneously open up and strengthen the body, including the all-important “core” muscles. It is a comprehensive activity on its own and an excellent complement to your yoga practice, cardiovascular activities or cross-training. The fluid movements of GYROKINESIS® can be reminiscent of swimming, dance, tai chi or gymnastics.

Why? GYROKINESIS® is designed to move the spine and joints through their full, healthy range, through flowing, smooth, rhythmic movements. This leads to enhanced spine and joint articulation and mobilization and improves the circulation of blood, lymphatic fluids and energy in the body. The corresponding breathing exercises oxygenate the blood, bolster the nervous system and clear energy channels. The result is a balancing of the whole body: muscles, joints, connective tissue and internal organs. Body awareness improves, and areas of tension soften. Meanwhile, muscular contraction, extension, flexibility and coordination increase.

Beyond the plentitude of physical benefits, GYROKINESIS® simply feels great in action. One student at Flow says of GYROKINESIS®, “It’s so freeing!” When one’s body feels stronger and free from limitations, it can affect one’s whole outlook and mood. Students often comment that it becomes a “healthy addiction” as they relearn to move themselves as freely and fully as they did when they were children.
